Push for fairer travel policies in sport

The Turnbull government is pushing major sports organisations to adopt gender neutral travel policies.

Female sports stars may no longer have to travel in cattle class while their male counterparts commute in business, following a rethink on sports funding arrangements.

Sports Minister Sussan Ley is demanding elite sporting organisations introduce gender neutral travel policies as a condition of federal government funding.

"In 2016 we can think of no defensible reason why male and female athletes should travel in different classes or stay in different standard accommodation when attending major international sporting events," Minister Ley said in a statement on Wednesday.

Labor MP Lisa Chesters said there was no justification for sport bodies upgrading male athletes over their female counterparts.

"We've got a long way to go to ensure our women athletes are treated the same as male athletes," she told reporters in Canberra.
