Qantas shares nosedive

Qantas shares are down more than three per cent today as the airline remains unsure when its fleet of A380 aircraft will return to the skies.

Chief executive Alan Joyce says checks have revealed problems with three Rolls-Royce engines on its A380s, meaning the six aircraft would remain grounded for the time being.

Qantas shares were down a full 10 cents - or 3.5 per cent - to $2.76 at 1138 AEDT.

They continued their slide from last Thursday's closing price of $2.89, the day an engine on an A380 exploded mid-air over Indonesia.

The airline hopes to have an idea of when its A380s will return to service within the next day.
