Qantas to use biofuel mix on US routes

Qantas' Los Angeles-based aircraft will start using biofuel from 2020 on services operating between the US and Australia to reduce emissions.

Qantas' LA-based aircraft will start using a biofuel mix on services between the US and Australia from 2020.

The airline has agreed a 10-year deal with US-based bio-energy company SG Preston to purchase 30 million litres of fuel - which consists of 50 per cent renewable jet fuel produced from non-food plant oils.

Qantas says the biofuel component emits half the amount of carbon emissions per gallon over its life cycle compared to standard jet fuel.
