Qld airline withdraws grounding appeal

A Cairns-based flight charter service has opted not to appeal a decision to ground the airline over serious safety breaches.

A far north Queensland charter service and flying school has withdrawn an appeal against a decision to shut down the airline over serious safety concerns.

Cairns-based Barrier Aviation had its air operator's certificate cancelled in March after a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) inquiry found the airline had put money-making above safety.

"Barrier Aviation had been operating aircraft with serious and known defects, as well as directing pilots to fly these aircraft," a statement from CASA said at the time.

"[The firm] had a poor safety culture and placed commercial imperatives before safety."

Barrier Aviation applied to have the decision reviewed by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, but the appeal has since been withdrawn, CASA confirmed on Monday.

Comment has been sought from Barrier Aviation.
