Queensland school students are on par with other states in reading and spelling but are falling behind in writing, preliminary NAPLAN results show.

Premier Annasatacia Palaszczuk on Wednesday said 240,000 Queensland students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 had completed the annual national test, which covers reading, writing and numeracy.

She said the result was one of the best for the state.

"I'm pleased to say that our students have recorded some of their highest scores since NAPLAN testing began in 2008," Ms Palaszczuk said.

Ms Palaszczuk and Education Minister Kate Jones praised students' performance in numeracy and reading categories.

They acknowledged the state's writing results, which dropped 0.57 per cent from last year, needed improvement.

"Overall, Queensland's strongest results occurred in Years 3, 5 and 7 and numeracy was a stand-out area of improvement across all year levels," Ms Palaszczuk said in a statement.

The premier said the results reaffirmed her government's spending on additional teacher aides and new teaching positions in state schools.

Ms Jones said more children were meeting national minimum standards and the proportion of students in the upper two bands in 11 of 20 test areas was the state's highest.

"Since we collected results in 2008, our state is improving year in and year out," she said.

Ms Jones said the government was working with Australian Catholic University to explore new approaches to improving writing skills.

Final results will be released in December.
