Qld cop back at work after driveway death

A Queensland police officer who ran over a man said to be lying in a driveway in February is back at work as the coroner considers the incident report.

A senior Queensland police officer who ran over and killed a man believed to be lying in the driveway of a Cairns police station is returning to work.

Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor stepped aside from his role two months ago following the incident, which resulted in the death of Longreach butcher Ryan Savage, 37.

Mr Taylor was arriving at work in the early hours of February 15 when he drove over the father of two in the carpark driveway.

Mr Savage, visiting Cairns to celebrate a buck's party, was trapped under the car and could not be saved.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said QPS spoke to Mr Savage's family, the coroner and the Crime and Corruption Commission before allowing Mr Taylor to return to regular duties on Monday.

"Our thoughts and condolences remain with the man's family and we will continue to provide support to them," he said.

Mr Taylor was promoted to the senior role of assistant commissioner in September last year.

A report into the incident is being considered by the coroner.
