A run-down Brisbane daycare centre where a baby was found dead has been shut down by the Department of Education.

A department spokesperson confirmed the family daycare service at Wallace Street, Moorooka had been shut down while the death of the five-month-old boy on Wednesday is being investigated.

Initial investigations indicate the death wasn't suspicious, however police are examining how children were cared for at the house which is in a messy state of disrepair.

A post-mortem was being completed on Thursday while the child protection unit and the childhood education and care office continue to investigate the centre's operations.
