Qld defeat WA by 97 runs in Shield

Queensland have defeated Western Australia by 97 runs in their Sheffield Shield clash in Townsville.

Legspinner Mitch Swepson has sparked a dramatic collapse for Queensland to snatch a stunning 97-run Sheffield Shield win over Western Australia in Townsville.

Set 335 for victory at Tony Ireland Stadium, the Warriors looked to at least ensure a draw when they were cruising at 4-221 late on Tuesday's final day.

Enter Swepson.

The 23-year-old took 3-56 as the visitors lost 5-16 within nine overs.

WA's run chase fell short at 9-237.

Warriors speedster Jason Behrendorff could not bat due to a leg stress fracture suffered on Sunday.

It marked back-to-back wins for the fourth-placed Bulls.

WA skipper Michael Klinger top scored with 65.

But Swepson was the talking point after taking three of the final five WA scalps along with Ben Cutting (3-48).

"He's a great young talent. He was able to open it up for us," Bulls skipper Chris Hartley told AAP.

"But we need to manage him like any young spinner in Australian cricket.

"He is talented but has a lot of learning to do.

"He shouldn't have too many high expectations put on him."

Swepson sparked the rout when he caught-and-bowled Ashton Turner for 49, ending a worrying 83-run fifth-wicket stand with Klinger.

"Looking at the deck and our opposition, it was always going to be a game that we would fight down to the wire," Hartley said.

Australian one-day bolter Hilton Cartwright appeared to warm up for next month's series against New Zealand when he belted a 38-ball 41 on Tuesday for WA, backing up his fine first-innings knock of 84.

In contrast, the Warriors' axed Test allrounder Mitch Marsh was bowled for a second-ball duck.

However, he took 4-38 before Queensland declared their second innings on Tuesday at 6-252.

Marsh took match figures of 6-112 but only managed a total of 14 runs for the first Shield clash held in Townsville.

WA are last on the Shield table after losing their first four games.
