Qld driver uses ute to smash graves

A man accused of using his ute to smash headstones in a Queensland cemetery has been charged after the vehicle got stuck in a grave.

A man in a ute has gone on a bizarre rampage in a far north Queensland cemetery before his vehicle got stuck in a grave.

Police found the man, who was allegedly drunk, in the driver's seat of his ute, unable to extract it from a grave at a Mareeba cemetery, west of Cairns.

He's accused of using the ute to smash up headstones and decorative fencing at three grave sites just before 8pm on Saturday.

The 45-year-old Mareeba man has been charged with wilful damage, driving under the influence of alcohol, and obstructing police.

He's due to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on December 11
