A petrol tank has exploded in Cairns, sending plumes of black smoke into the air, prompting police to evacuate businesses and declare an emergency.
Four fire crews are trying to put out the blaze that ignited just before midday on Wednesday at a scrap metal yard Comport St in Portsmith.
The street has been closed and drivers are being asked to stay away.
Residents in the area have been asked to close windows and doors, and those with respiratory conditions should keep medications close.
Queensland Ambulance treated two people on the scene, one for shock and another with an ear injury.
