A young girl is fighting for life in a north Queensland hospital after her mother found her hanging by her neck from a swing set.

An RACQ-CQ Rescue helicopter spokeswoman said the three-year-old girl was flown to Mackay Hospital after the incident on the family's property at Koumala, south of Mackay, on Thursday afternoon.

"The child was believed to be playing on a swing set as her mother tended to animals on the property," the spokeswoman said.

"When the mother returned to check on the child, she found her daughter hanging with the swing rope around her neck and not breathing."

The spokeswoman said she believed CPR was performed on the girl and her pulse returned before paramedics arrived.
