Qld glider crash investigations continue

Forensic specialists are continuing their investigation into a fatal glider crash in Queensland's Darling Downs region.

Police investigations continue into a fatal glider crash in Queensland's Darling Downs region that killed an experienced pilot and a student.

It's not clear if instructor Jeremy Thompson was flying the aircraft when it suddenly nosedived from up to 50 feet and crashed into a field near the runway at the Darling Downs Soaring Club at Bowenville before 10am on Tuesday.

Mr Thompson and his 60-year-old student Norbert Gross from Jubilee Pocket in the Whitsundays both died at the scene.

The wife of the 62-year-old instructor had flown the plane needed to lift the glider into the air and landed before her husband.

She saw the tragedy unfold from the ground.

The crash happened as the pair were returning from a training flight, Gliding Federation of Australia's operations executive manager Christopher Thorpe said.

He said the pilot "had been flying for a very, very long time".

Gliding experts and forensic police are investigating whether the tragedy occurred due to pilot error or a mechanical fault.
