Qld govt denies estimates stalling tactic

The Queensland government has urged the opposition to come up with "better questions" ahead of the start of the second week of state budget estimates hearings.

The Queensland Government has encouraged the state opposition to come up with "better questions" if it's worried about how state budget estimates hearings are going.

The second week of the annual estimates hearings begins on Tuesday, with Health Minister Steven Miles, Communities, Disabilities and Seniors Minister Coralee O'Rourke, and Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women Di Farmer all due to face questions about their portfolios.

The first week of hearings last week was plagued with frequent stoppages as the committees got bogged down in procedure, with Labor members of committees making frequent objections to questions from Liberal National Party MPs.

That's been slammed as a deliberate tactic by the opposition, but State Development Minister Cameron Dick, who faced last week's hearings, said the opposition couldn't flout the rules.

"They need to do their research, they need to do their homework, they need to ask better questions. We're there, we're there for hours on end," he told reporters on Monday.

"We make ourselves open, open to the process and open to those questions and we don't restrict what happens in that hearing other than expecting members of Parliament to comply with the standing orders."

Mr Dick said the government took estimates "very seriously" and rejected suggestions the frequent objections by government MPs was a move to shield ministers from questions.

Ministers Miles, O'Rourke and Farmer are set to face questions around ambulance ramping at hospitals, cuts to maternity services and blowouts to emergency department waiting times among other things at estimates on Tuesday.
