Qld govt to unveil rent-to-build scheme

A scheme designed to boost affordable accommodation close to the Brisbane CBD is set to be announced by the Queensland treasurer.

Queensland's state government is set to unveil a $70 million build-to-rent scheme aimed at boosting affordable housing close to the Brisbane CBD.

The program will offer subsidies to the private sector in exchange for providing affordable rentals within 10km of the CBD.

The plan is designed to help those on low-to-middle incomes into long-term rental accommodation close to their workplace, the newspaper said.

Housing Minister Mick de Brenni said many Queenslanders were being "priced out" of CBD areas.

"If you live and work in the inner city near somewhere like a school or hospital you ought to be able to live close to where you work," Mr de Brenni said.

"Those low-to-moderate income jobs and those workers are being priced out of the rental market where they work."

He said the build-to-rent initiative would see government partner with institutional investors.

Renters would have to pass a "occupation eligibility" to ensure the apartments go to key jobs including child care workers, nurses, hospitality workers and teachers.

Property Council of Australia Queensland executive director Chris Mountford described the move as a win-win for the property industry and Queensland renters.

"This is a very welcome step towards creating a new way of delivering housing options for Queenslanders that will deliver high quality rental accommodation and provide greater security of tenure," Mr Mountford said.

"Tenants in build-to-rent developments are able to enjoy longer contracts, and greater amenity than what is available in the current private rental market."
