Despite the annual local risk and current high-profile fires in NSW, almost half of all Queenslanders would be unprepared for a bushfire if it threatened their homes.
Forty nine per cent of homeowners polled by the 2013 RACQ Insurance Bushfire Preparedness Index said they would not know what do do if a burning wall of flames approached their property.
Almost one fifth (19 per cent) admitted ignoring total fire bans, while almost three-quarters (74 per cent) said they had seen someone else doing so.
Homeowners also admitted failure to take basic precautions like pruning trees and bushes and cleaning gutters, RACQ spokesman Mike Sopinski said.
"This lack of preparedness shows there is room for improvement, and we encourage all homeowners to take the basic precautionary measures to protect their assets," he said.
