Qld LNP candidate unexpectedly quits race

The LNP have had to replace the candidate for the federal Queensland seat of Lilley after Jim Liu stepped down to return to mental health work.

The LNP suddenly have a new candidate for the federal Queensland seat of Lilley after Jim Liu unexpectedly stepped down.

Despite being preselected for the seat, Mr Liu will instead return to work full-time in the mental health sector, The Courier-Mail reported on Friday.

"I have spent a long time over the summer reflecting on how I can best use my skills and energy to serve the community," Mr Liu said.

"And I have decided that I can do that best as a mental health nurse."

Mr Liu has reportedly been replaced with tree lopper Brad Carswell, who originally eyeballed a spot in the Senate.

In a video posted to his Facebook page, Mr Carswell lauds himself as a hard worker who "understands the value of the dollar and how hard it is to come by".

The new candidate also founded Carbon Renewable Energy, which aims to harvest prickly acacia into torrefied wood pellets to export as a carbon neutral alternative to coal.

Lilley is current held by retiring Labor MP Wayne Swan by a margin of about 5.8 per cent.

Anika Wells will look to fill his shoes for Labor when the federal election is held, likely in May.
