Qld man dies as crash tears car in half

A 22-year-old man has died after a car was torn in half when it collided with trees after leaving a Queensland road on Friday night.

A man has died after a car veered off a Queensland road, crashed into trees and spilt in half.

Police say the crash occurred around 8.40pm on Friday night when a car travelling west on Maleny-Kenilworth Road near the Sunshine Coast overtook several cars.

The car then left the road, impacted with the trees and split into two pieces.

The 22-year-old passenger died at the scene while the 39-year-old driver was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.

An officer at the scene told reporters it had been a "harrowing" sight.

"It's not one we come across all that often," he said.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
