Police have revealed there was no child at risk after they arrested a tattooed man who told a Gold Coast service station worker he would hurt a baby in his gym bag.

An amber child abduction alert was issued about 10.30am after the man entered the Labrador service station and threatened to hurt the small child.

A police spokesman confirmed the man was arrested on Scarborough Street in Southport about three hours later.

"Through investigations and other information, we've been able to quickly obtain that there was no child," inspector Marc Hogan told reporters on Thursday.

Police conducted an extensive search of the area once the man left the service station but when they failed to find him, they issued the amber alert.

"We can't second guess these things, we've got to take these things seriously," Insp Hogan said.

"Fortunately, it's panned out that the information obviously wasn't right."
