Qld man 'raped online date' after trial

A man accused of raping a woman in the grounds of a Brisbane cathedral has been granted bail with strict conditions.

A Brisbane man allegedly raped a woman he met through an online dating application just days after he was acquitted of similar charges.

The 25-year-old, who can't be named, was granted bail with strict conditions in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday.

He was arrested last month on two charges of rape and one charge each of sexual assault and deprivation of liberty.

The man's bail hearing was told he allegedly groped the woman, digitally raped her and forced her to have sex with him in the grounds of a Brisbane city cathedral while the pair were on a first date in late August.

It was four days after a jury had found the man not guilty of sexually assaulting another woman he'd known for a brief period.

He met the woman in the current case online and they exchanged text messages before arranging to meet at a bar in Brisbane's Queen Street, according to police allegations read out by Justice John Bond on Friday.

The man suggested a walk and pushed her against a monument in the cathedral grounds, then kissed her and groped her breasts.

The woman allegedly said she wasn't that "into him" and he would "have to work for it" because she didn't have sex on a first date.

He replied that he was working for it before raping her and later sexually assaulting her in her car after making her drive him home, according to police.

Crown prosecutor Matthew Hynes said his brazen offending so soon after the trial showed an "inability to control his sexual tendencies".

The man's lawyer, Douglas Wilson, argued that consent would be an issue at the trial.

Justice Bond agreed to release the man on bail, but only on strict conditions, including that he stay indoors between 7pm and 6am, not use online dating services and report three times a week to police.
