Qld 'meteor flash' captured on camera

Secujrity camera footage has emerged of what is believed to have been a meteor over central Queensland on Monday night.

The Queensland government has released CCTV footage that appears to capture the bright flash of a meteor over central Queensland.

Confusion surrounds a sonic boom and bright flash reported by people across the state on Monday night, with speculation a meteor flew over Gladstone and plummeted into the ocean.

The footage was taken at Fishermen's Landing, north of Gladstone.

Dozens of people took to social media to share their experiences, many describing a "bright flash", loud "bangs" and their houses "shaking".

A Geosciences Australia spokesman confirmed there had been a "tremor" around Gladstone about 8.30pm on Monday and that it wasn't caused by an earthquake.

Harvard astrophysicist Johnathan Powell told the Gladstone Observer "this sounds like a big (meteor), first in several years that has been that big".

"I'm guessing about a rock about a metre across which would have been big enough perhaps to leave fragments," he said.

Police said they had received numerous calls from residents, but no damage had been reported.

Higgins Storm Chasing weather group said the meteor most likely impacted somewhere offshore because there were no reports of damage on land.
