Qld minister won't face ethics committee

Queensland Speaker Fiona Simpson can't see any evidence of contempt of parliament from Transport Minister Scott Emerson.

Queensland's transport minister will not be referred to the parliamentary Ethics Committee over allegations he lied about knowing a staffer professionally.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson told parliament last year he may have met some of his departmental liaison officers before they got their jobs, but said he didn't know any of them on a professional level.

Under questioning in a budget estimates hearing last month, Mr Emerson said departmental liaison officer Kristy Konings worked on his 2009 and 2012 election campaigns.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk last month asked Speaker Fiona Simpson to refer the minister to parliament's Ethics Committee because of a "discrepancy" in his statements.

But Ms Simpson on Thursday ruled that Mr Emerson wouldn't be referred to the committee because she was "not convinced that there is sufficient evidence of any elements of the alleged contempt".

"The answers in 2013 simply provided more detail as the questions themselves were more detailed and focused," she added.

"Accordingly, I will not be referring the matter to the Ethics Committee."
