Qld missing man to face child porn charges

A man who vanished from a far north Queensland beach and was missing for two weeks is due to face court on numerous child porn charges next month.

A man, who was found at a far north Queensland beach two weeks after going missing, was charged with possessing and making child pornography the day before he disappeared.

Garry Amey, 60, was found dehydrated and confused in the ocean at Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns, by two passers by on Saturday.

The day before his October 11 disappearance, Amey was charged with five child pornography related offences, with police alleging he made the material and used a carriage service between August 2010 and August 2012.

Amey is due to face Cairns Magistrates Court on November 10 on three counts of possessing child exploitation material, one count of making child exploitation material and one count of using a carriage service for child pornography.

Police say on the day Amey was charged he had materials with him.

Amey, who is now recovering in hospital, was targeted by online child-porn unit Task Force Argos.

His wife of 38 years, Arlene Amey, said the charges were news to her.

"I don't know anything about it," she told AAP on Monday night.

Since being found more than 20 kilometres from where he went missing, Amey has said little and has been drifting in and out of sleep.

The father-of-two told his wife he'd be back from a walk in time to watch the Bathurst 1000 car race on the day he disappeared.

Hours later, he was spotted sunburnt and acting unusually at Kewarra Beach, where people stopped to ask if he was alright.

A 10-day search of public, bushland and ocean areas was called off after it failed to find any trace of the man.

Acting Superintendent Rhys Newton said it was not unusual for people to avoid being found if they "decide to drop out of their lives".

He said police are keen to speak to the man as soon as he is well enough.
