The grieving mother of two young girls who drowned in their Logan backyard says she's haunted by the image of her daughters in their swimming pool.

Renise Young jumped into the pool and frantically tried to save Patricia, 3, and Taya, 4, after five-year-old son Aige raised the alarm on Tuesday afternoon.

As police and council officers investigate, Ms Young said there was no warning the sisters had made their way into the fully-fenced pool at their Logan home.

"I was just screaming," the tearful mother told the Nine Network.

"It was horrible. To see your children helpless at the bottom of the pool, it's just terrible.

"Every time I walk out the back I just see those images and it destroys me.

"It's something that no mother should have to go through."

Police are investigating whether the girls used a nearby outdoor chair or a trampoline to access the pool area.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the sisters' deaths were a terrible reminder of pool safety and urged all pool owners to double check their compliance to regulations.

"This is a tragic reminder of the importance, as well, of pool safety requirements imposed on swimming pools in Queensland," she said.

Ms Young said the first she and husband Troy knew anyone was in the pool was when she heard son Aige yelling for help.

"All of a sudden our son's running upstairs saying 'the girls are dead, the girls are dead'," she said.

"We had the back door open and we didn't hear no splashes from the pool or anything."

Logan City Council officers are also investigating, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
