Maverick Queensland Labor MP Jo-Ann Miller has ruled out a run for the upcoming Ipswich mayoral election saying the job to 'clean it up' is for someone else.

The former police minister had been considered a possible contender for the election, brought on by the departure of long-standing mayor Paul Pisasale, who has been charged with extortion by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

But the Bundamba MP on Monday said she would contest the next state election, due by early next year.

"I've decided to stay in the state parliament, if people will re-elect me," she told ABC Radio.

She said "thousands of people" across Ipswich had asked her to run for mayor, and she said whoever was elected would have their work cut out for them.

"I think it will take many years for whoever is elected as mayor of Ipswich to clean it up and clean it out," she said.

Ms Miller has become known for her fierce style of questioning during budget estimates, where she has proved more successful than the state opposition at grilling ministers.

Last week she confronted Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on why Indian conglomerate Adani couldn't buy coal from existing Queensland mines instead of buildings its controversial $16 billion Carmichael mine

She also put Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, who holds an environmentally-conscious electorate, in a difficult position by asking whether she supported the mine.

On Monday Ms Miller defended those lines of questioning, saying she was simply speaking up for members of her community.

"I feel like an effective member of parliament," she said.
