Qld name teenage rookies for Shield opener

Two teenagers including the big-hitting Max Bryant are in line to make their Sheffield Shield debuts in Queensland's opening clash next week with Tasmania.

Big-hitting Max Bryant and fellow teenager Nathan McSweeney are set for Sheffield Shield debuts after being including in Queensland's squad for next week's opener against Tasmania.

Bryant, 19, is in fine white-ball form ahead of the first-round clash starting on Tuesday at the Gabba.

He clubbed the fastest List A half-century by a Queensland player with a whirlwind 71 - 68 of them scored in boundaries - in a one-day clash last month with South Australia.

He reached 50 in 23 balls against the Redbacks - the equal-fifth fastest in domestic 50-over cricket.

The teenager is in the Bulls' Shield squad with his former Australian under-19 teammate McSweeney - a middle order batsman who can also bowl offspin.

They get a Shield chance with Queensland's Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Renshaw, Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett on Test duty in the UAE.

Allrounder Jack Wildermuth has recovered from a side strain suffered last month during the Bull's one-day campaign, while ex-Test quick Peter George has returned after being troubled last summer with a back complaint.

George is set to play his first game for the Bulls since March 2017.

Queensland's Shield squad: James Peirson (capt), Max Bryant, Joe Burns, Luke Feldman, Peter George, Sam Heazlett, Charlie Hemphrey, Nathan McSweeney, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Sam Truloff, Jack Wildermuth (12th man to be named).
