Qld NYE celebrations begin

A family fireworks show has lit up Brisbane's CBD with more than 100,000 expected to turn up for the main event at midnight.

Brisbane's CBD has been lit up with a spectacular fireworks display ahead of a larger display when Queenslanders ring in the New Year.

More than 100,000 revellers are expected turn out at Brisbane's South Bank to view the largest New Year's Eve display in the state's history.

The synchronised fireworks display will be set off from five barges and three CBD rooftops and will coincide with a display on the Gold Coast.

A smaller family fireworks show light up the River City abut 8.30pm (AEST).

Meanwhile, hundreds of police officers are patrolling Brisbane and the Gold Coast, with residents being reminded to be well-behaved and vigilant about their safety in public places.
