Qld power companies promise discount

Queensland power companies Ergon and Energex have promised a one-off $50 discount to power bills in 2020

Customers of Queensland electricity companies Ergon and Energex will get a one-off discount on their power bills, however it won't be for nearly two years.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told state parliament on Tuesday the companies were proposing a one-off reduction of their distribution network charges in July 2020.

The measure is understood to be worth around $54 for the average residential customer, and around $50 for small businesses.

Ms Palaszczuk hailed the discount as proof the government's policy of maintaining ownership of the state's energy generators was worth it.

"This one-off reduction in distribution network charges is in addition to the, on average, seven per cent annual reductions my government has delivered every year since 2015," Ms Palaszczuk told parliament.

"Together with the growing investment in renewables, that means Queensland has the cheapest generation in the country, and it's getting cheaper."
