US President Barack Obama and his family have been invited to holiday in Queensland and see the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she has personally invited Mr Obama, his wife Michelle and two daughters, Malia and Sasha, to visit the natural icon once his presidency finishes.

"To have someone of his international standing come to the Great Barrier Reef ... the opportunities will be indeed endless," Ms Palaszczuk said on Sunday.

"Everyone remembers when former president Bill Clinton and Hillary came and visited Queensland (in 1996) and spent time at Port Douglas and on the reef.

"Well we want to show the same opportunities to President Obama."

The US president warned that the Great Barrier Reef was under threat from climate change when he was in Brisbane for the G20 summit in November 2014.

"The incredible natural glory of the Great Barrier Reef is threatened," he said.

"I want my daughters to be able to come back and I want them to be able to bring their daughters or sons to visit. And I want that there 50 years from now."

Ms Palaszczuk said the state was working closely with the federal government to address impacts on the iconic reef, including water quality.
