Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she won't set the date for a by-election in Toowoomba South until John McVeigh resigns.

Queensland's premier says she won't set a by-election date for Toowoomba South until Liberal National Party MP John McVeigh actually resigns.

Mr McVeigh, who recently won preselection to contest the federal seat of the Groom for the LNP, has already revealed he'll resign from state parliament on April 29 to give the government time to prepare for the by-election and finalise matters in his electorate.

"Until I see that resignation in black and white, that is the time that I will then consider the issues associated with the by-election," Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said on Sunday.
