A small group of protesters shouting "shame Sultan, shame" has rallied in front of the Royal on the Park Hotel in Brisbane.

The crowd of about 70 people demonstrated on Saturday against the sultanate's new sharia penal code, which punishes homosexuality, adultery and blasphemy with the death penalty.

They say the hotel is owned by the tiny but oil-rich nation, located to the north of Australia.

Labor senator for Queensland Claire Moore told protesters they should call the Brunei High Commission in Canberra and express their disapproval to the laws.

"Get onto them and make sure they are aware their leadership is doing something that is bringing Brunei into shame," she said.

"Large organisations like Amnesty and groups of people across the world are focusing in on Brunei, so we're part of that."
