Qld public sector report urges openess

A long-awaited report into the Queensland public sector has recommended the government be more open and accountable about the performance of the public service.

The Queensland government has been urged to be more open and accountable about the performance of the public service in a report it waited a year to release.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday finally released the KPMG report into the efficiency of the state's public service, less than a week before the start of state budget estimate hearings.

"A great body of work has been done and our advancing Queensland priorities now adopts those recommendations," she said on Friday.

The findings recommend the government establish a public dashboard of public service objectives in addition to the current Service Delivery Statements which are already published.

The premier said the government was now going one step further than the report to understand the needs of a modern workforce so services are delivered to where they're needed.

"We have a changing economy and we want to make sure we are delivering services exactly where they are needed," she said

The findings of the report have already led to better collaboration by ministers and between departments, the premier said.

Former Queensland University of Technology Vice-Chancellor Peter Coaldrake has now been tasked with a fresh examination of the government's delivery of services.

The premier said inaccurate data collection had led to an erosion of the quality of government services provided to Queenslanders.

The hiring of consultants and contractors by the government will also be examined in a bid to drive down costs and keep a lid on wages.
