Qld schools open after cyclone Yasi

All state, Catholic and independent schools in north Queensland that closed following tropical cyclone Yasi will reopen on Monday.

The director-general of the Queensland Department of Education, Julie Grantham, said the schools now have essential services and have been deemed safe.

"The department would like to thank the tireless efforts of staff, parents, students, emergency services and volunteers who helped our schools reopen so quickly after such a major catastrophe," Ms Grantham said in a statement.

Last Monday, more than 60 schools across north and far north Queensland affected by Yasi were closed.
