A spearfisherman attacked by a shark in far north Queensland remains in a critical but stable condition.

Glenn Dickson, 25, reportedly had his leg amputated after he was bitten near Hinchinbrook Island, off the coast of Cardwell on Saturday morning.

Family, friends and strangers have rallied behind the young father, raising more than $25,000 in 48 hours.

Friend Amber Edwards set up the GoFundMe page on the same day as Mr Dickson was attacked.

Ms Edwards called on people to help the family out while Mr Dickson recovered and he and fiancee Jessie Lee prepared for the arrival of their third child in June.

"To be able to take this burden off of this wonderful family would help in some ways, ease the pain of watching the man they love tackle the biggest emotional and physical hurdle of his life," she wrote on the page.

Mr Dickson's friends have been hailed as heroes after they quickly helped him out of the water, tied a tourniquet around his leg and took him to shore.

He was then airlifted to a Cairns hospital for emergency surgery.

Officer in charge of the Cardwell ambulance station, Martin Taylor, said his three friends "definitely" saved Mr Dickson's life.

The GoFundMe page has a target of $50,000, which will be deposited into Mr Dickson and Ms Lee's bank accounts.
