Former Queensland centre Josh Hannay will replace Anthony Seibold as Maroons assistant coach for the 2018 State of Origin series.

Queensland Rugby League announced on Thursday that Hannay would juggle his assistant coaching duties with NRL club North Queensland to help Maroons mentor Kevin Walters this year.

Hannay slots into the Maroons support team for Seibold who will enjoy his first NRL season as South Sydney head coach in 2018.

"I've really enjoyed working with some of the best young talent in the state through the Queensland pathway age groups and to now graduate to the senior team and work with Kevin and the current group of players is going to be a fantastic opportunity," said Hannay, who played two Origin games for Queensland.

After a 12-season playing career in the NRL and UK, Hannay cut his teeth in coaching in the Mackay District Rugby League before a three-season stint as Queensland Cup club Souths Logan Magpies mentor from 2014.

He joined Cowboys mentor Paul Green's support staff late last year and held the reins for the Queensland Under 18 team the past two seasons.

"I'm really excited about Josh's appointment and what he will bring to our team this year," Queensland coach Walters said.

"Like Anthony, Josh is an aspiring top grade coach who has come through the Intrust Super Cup and our representative pathways.

"He's currently working full-time with a very successful NRL club and I believe he's got a lot to offer the Maroons set up when we get our preparations underway."
