Police are considering laying charges after a three-year-old girl was shot in the leg with a homemade firearm in southeast Queensland.
Officers were told at 11pm (AEST) on Thursday that the toddler had been taken to Caboolture Hospital by relatives with a gunshot wound to her left thigh.
The girl's parents, another adult and a number of children were at the Morayfield house when the girl was injured.
Acting Detective Inspector Teena Rolls says police haven't ruled out laying charges, although detectives are still trying to determine how the girl was shot.
"We expect that once we finalise our investigation that's (laying charges) a consideration," she said on Friday.
"All we know at this point is that the device discharged resulting in an injury to the girl."
Det Insp Rolls said it was too early to say whether the girl had been playing with the device when it discharged.
"It's always concerning when there's a weapon in a home with young children," she said.
Detectives have spoken to the girl's parents.
Det Insp Rolls wouldn't say whether other weapons were found at the property but said a number of items were seized.
The girl was undergoing surgery on Friday and her condition was listed as stable.
