Communities warned of flood danger

North Queensland communities are being urged to prepare for potentially flooding rain.

Widespread rainfall between 100mm and 200mm is expected to be dumped on parts of the tropical coast today.

The heaviest falls are expected between Babinda and Rollingstone, and isolated falls could exceed 200mm.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued flood watch warnings for the Flinders River, Gulf Rivers Catchments and the North Tropical Coast between Babinda and Rollingstone.

Elderly woman drowns in NT floods

On Sunday night, a woman died after her car got caught in a floodway in the Northern Territory.

A police helicopter spotted the vehicle in floodwaters about four kilometres from the remote Beswick community, east of Katherine.

It's believed the elderly woman was one of five people in the car.

"This is the second person who has been washed away in a flooded creek since Christmas," NT Police, Fire and Emergency Commander Bruce Porter said.

"Again I urge people to avoid taking unnecessary risks on the roads and avoid driving into floodways."

The Bureau of Meteorology still has flood watch warnings for parts of the top end.
