Qld wants Vic offer on school funding plan

Queensland's education minister says his state will join Labor's schools funding plan if it gets the same offer as Victoria.

Qld wants Vic offer on school funding plan

Queensland will sign up to Labor's school funding plan if it gets the same deal as Victoria.

Queensland will sign up to the federal government's school funding reforms immediately if it gets the same deal as Victoria, Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek says.

Mr Langbroek says Victoria and Queensland have been asking for exactly the same concessions.

"The non-negotiables for Victoria and Queensland were both about those issues of federal bureaucracy and concessions about the money we'd prepared to put in," he said.

"The concession about bureaucracy has been given; there's no interference from the federal government.

"They are going to amend the legislation.

"We'd be happy to do that for Queensland as well and happy to sign up today if they give us the same deal."

Federal Education Minister Bill Shorten has welcomed Mr Langbroek's announcement.

However, Queensland needs to contribute more cash if they want the same deal, a spokeswoman for Mr Shorten told AAP.

"In order to receive the same deal as Victoria, the Queensland government must demonstrate their intention to contribute three per cent growth from 2015 onwards," she said.

She said during Wednesday's negotiations, Mr Langbroek was not interested in committing to a growth in funding as security against the state pulling money out of education in the future while the Commonwealth contribution grows at 4.7 per cent.
