Queensland have welcomed back Matt Renshaw but coach Phil Jaques believes the Test opener's Sheffield Shield days might be numbered this summer.

Queensland coach Phil Jaques has welcomed the return of Test opener Matt Renshaw to Sheffield Shield duty.

But he doesn't think he will have him back for long.

Renshaw and Test teammate Usman Khawaja were named in the Bulls' squad for next week's day-night Shield clash with Western Australia in Perth.

It looms as a potential bat-off between Renshaw and the man he has replaced as Test opener, WA's injury-plagued Shaun Marsh, before the three-Test series against Pakistan.

Marsh, 33, is no certainty to return from a broken finger for the pink-ball Shield clash starting on Monday.

It will the last chance to impress selectors before the first Test from December 15 in Brisbane.

Either way, Jaques believed Renshaw had done enough to convince him the 20-year-old's Bulls' days might be numbered.

"He was very solid, very patient. He waited for his opportunity and put the bad ball away," Jaques told AAP.

Jaques says Renshaw's return is a shot in the arm for the fourth-placed Bulls who have claimed back-to-back Shield wins.

But he hoped Renshaw did not remain in the Bulls' set-up this summer with the Test series against Pakistan looming.

"We (Queensland) want to win, obviously, but we want to produce players for higher honours," he said.

"I love watching Matt play for Australia.

"And I know all the boys here have been cheering him on.

"It was good to see him get a few (in the second innings of the third Test against South Africa) - hopefully, there are a few more opportunities down the line."

Khawaja and Renshaw replace Sam Truloff and Charlie Hemphrey in the Bulls' squad.

Luke Feldman and fellow quick Mark Steketee have been included in a 13-strong squad, with Ben Cutting overlooked.

"Ben's bowled the most overs he has bowled at the same point for the past three seasons," Bulls physio Martin Love said.

"And with another game quite close, and the long travel leg to Perth and back, it was thought prudent to give him additional recovery time."
