Qld youngsters performing in Shield

Young players are proving their value for Queensland as the team looks toward a mix of youth and experience.

Queensland are faring well in their transition period as young players step up and perform, says skipper Chris Hartley.

With new additions to the Bulls' squad starring in the side's three-wicket win over Tasmania in Hobart, selectors appear to be flush with talent for the season ahead.

Left handers Sam Heazlett and Scott Henry have proven valuable in the top order in the absence of Test players Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns.

"We saw the talent they've got and you had to see the way Sam Heazlett batted to see that there's some exceptional talent in these young guys," Hartley told reporters after play on Monday.

"But in saying that they haven't played a lot of games and they don't have a lot of experience so they are going to have to learn very quickly about tough first-class cricket."

Heazlett scored 129 and 78 across two innings making his Sheffield Shield debut at Bellerive Oval.

His contribution underpinned Queensland's victory.

Hartley said Queensland needs to find a balance of youth and experience with the side needing to rely less on veteran players such as James Hopes, who was rested for the Hobart fixture.

Queensland's Shield side has one loss and one win for the season so far and on Saturday take on South Australia at the Gabba.
