Qlders reassured about flood clean up

Residents in flood-ravaged parts of southeast Queensland have been reassured it is safe for them to clean up ahead of inspections by their insurance company.

Southeast Queenslanders whose homes were inundated by floodwaters have been assured it is safe to clean up before insurance companies assess the damage.

Logan City Council mayor Luke Smith hit out at companies on Tuesday after about 60 residents told him they had been instructed not to touch their homes until someone inspected the property.

Mr Smith said he was later told by the Insurance Council of Australia that photos and videos of the damage would be adequate.

"I appreciate the Insurance Council of Australia's advice but the assessors need to get out here and help these people clean up," he told AAP on Tuesday.

The state government and ICA has since moved to reassure Queensland residents affected by Cyclone Debbie and the floods that they can start to repair their homes.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt said customers should take photos of items and contact their insurer before they threw items away.

"This is so that policyholders can provide evidence to substantiate their claims," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ICA urged residents to speak to their insurance company before they started any building work or emergency repairs.

Affected customers should also make a list of each damaged item and keep samples of materials and fabrics to show the assessor.

The clean up in the worst-affected areas of Logan and Beenleigh will continue on Wednesday.

More than 1000 'mud army' volunteers have registered to help residents impacted by the floods, which tore through parts of the southeast on Friday.
