Qld's Olympic bid unharmed by IOC call

Queensland bidders say wins for Paris and Los Angeles to host the 2024 and 2028 Olympics won't affect efforts to bring the Games to Brisbane.

A decision by the International Olympic Committee to earmark the 2024 and 2028 Olympics to Los Angeles and Paris will not affect efforts to bring a future Games to Brisbane.

South East Queensland's Council of Mayors has been in the process of undertaking a feasibility study to determine if they would bid to host the 2028 Games.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has indicated those plans have not been affected by an IOC vote overnight and the feasibility study is still on track to go ahead.

Mr Quirk said the IOC had notified the Council of Mayors of their decision to offer both Paris and LA hosting rights for 2024 and 2028 and they would review the announcement.

"The feasibility works associated with the potential bid are identifying and prioritising the future infrastructure needs of SEQ and that is very important for the future of our region whether or not we have an Olympic Games," he said.

"We will review the IOC's announcement and have a discussion at our next meeting later this month before making a decision about the way forward from here."

The possibility of Brisbane, particularly, being the host city for a future Olympics was first entertained when IOC chief Thomas Bach raised the prospect in 2015.

Mr Bach said the Queensland capital would be well placed considering the success of Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

While he had indicated Brisbane should target 2028, local mayors had also considered the prospects of waiting until 2032.

Support for a combined southeast Queensland bid has however been mixed with Gold Coast and Logan City, the two biggest councils outside Brisbane, withdrawing their interest in a feasibility study.
