It is a shallow quake, occuring at a depth of only 10 kilometres.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties, and no tsunami warnings have been issued.
The tremour was felt in Taiwan and in southern Japan.Buildings in the Taiwanese capital Taipei reportedly swayed as a result of the quake, though no buildings have been damaged and no injureies reported.

The quake happened just before 11am local time, and was locatedaround 245 kilometers south-southwest of Japan's Ryukyu Islands.
Originally measured at 6.9, the quake was subsequently revised down to 6.5 on the Richter scale.
