Police still don't know how a Queensland teenager ended up alight on a Noosa doorstep.

The 14-year-old was already on fire when he banged on the door of a Sunrise Beach home on Saturday night, desperately seeking help.

He was later airlifted to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital with serious burns to his body.

The boy is in a stable condition with burns to his chest, back and under the arm.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman told AAP these were second-degree burns, which affect the top two layers of skin.
