Queensland resident dies in NZ canyon fall

A woman who fell about 100m to her death in New Zealand's Southern Alps on the weekend is reported to be a paramedic from Queensland.

A German woman working as a paramedic in Queensland has died in a canyoning accident in Arthur's Pass National Park in New Zealand, according to reports.

NZ police have confirmed a tourist died on Saturday after falling down a waterfall at Twin Creek Falls on South Island.

She has been named by media as Verena Jantje Kuhl, known as Jantje. Condolence messages were posted on her Facebook page this week.

Ms Kuhl had been on a canyoning trip with her partner when she fell about 100m while abseiling. Her partner set off his personal locator beacon to alert emergency services.

NZCC Greymouth Rescue Helicopter base manager Angus Taylor told the Christchurch Star the man was flown to the Arthur's Pass National Park Visitor Centre.

"He wasn't saying much, but you would expect that, he had just lost his wife," he said.

Ms Kuhl's body was winched out shortly after.

She and her partner were thought to have been experienced at canyoning, which involves scrambling down mountain streams through a combination of swimming, walking and abseiling.

Her death has been referred to the coroner, police said.
