Queensland sports fans to witness history

Queensland sports fans will witness history with derbies in two national football codes being played at the same location this weekend.

This Saturday Queenslanders will be treated to home fixtures for the NRL, AFL and A League and for the first time two derbies happening within 10km of each other.

The Gold Coast will create history by hosting the Suns taking on the Lions and the Titans playing the Cowboys.

The Suns-Lions bounce is at 4pm at Metricon while the Titans and North Queensland kick-off at Cbus Stadium at 8pm.

Before the derbies start, Metricon will host the Brisbane Lions women's team who face Adelaide in the inaugural Grand Final of the Women's League.

There will be free public transport offered to all fans across southeast Queensland as the Lions aim to win the flag for the first time.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate is expecting big numbers at Metricon and wants more elite sport to visit the coast.

"This AFLW Grand Final and AFL double header underscores our ability to host major sporting events," he said.

"Metricon is a world-class venue with seamless public transport options from heavy rail or express buses.

"I tip 20,000 plus for the Saturday spectacle. We just need to send this rainy weather back to Melbourne where it belongs.''

Back up the M1 Brisbane will take on Melbourne In the A League.

Victory sit in second place on 45 points, 12 points above the Roar, but if Brisbane can salvage a win they'll likely move into third place.
