A Queensland horse rider has died after being thrown from her "spooked" horse and kicked in the head by the animal south of Brisbane.

The 46-year-old was travelling with another female rider at Bahrs Scrub about 7.15am Sunday when her animal became scared by a passing vehicle, began bucking and then struck her in the head while she was on the ground.

Police said she was taken to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital with significant head injuries but died a few hours after she was admitted.
