Question time in federal parliament

What we learned, heard and were amused by in question time on Thursday.

QUESTION TIME IN FEDERAL PARLIAMENT

WHAT WE LEARNED

* By 2020 only one country in the OECD - Portugal - will have a higher company tax rate than Australia, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told MPs.

* Someone on $205,000 will pay 13 times more tax than someone on $41,000 under the government's income tax restructure, the PM said.

* Progressivity - a term the PM and his treasurer used to explain our income tax system - is a real word, even if it's not everyday language for the rest of us.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT WANTED TO SPIN

We're committed to ensuring the Australian economy is strong, because we know everything depends on a strong economy.

WHAT LABOR WANTED TO TALK ABOUT

The total cost of corporate tax cuts over 10 years from July 1, 2018, both legislated and proposed to be legislated.

THEY SAID WHAT

"His interjections are regular but they're not persuasive." - Speaker Tony Smith puts Leader of the House Christopher Pyne back in his box.

"It's 10 years, you've got 10 fingers. Count them up." - Treasurer Scott Morrison taunts his shadow Chris Bowen over corporate tax cuts.

"I'm being nice! This is nice Penny!" - Labor Senate leader Penny Wong tells Government Leader Mathias Cormann.

TWEETED

@andrewgiles: Hands up who's knocked back a pay rise because it would put (some of) their earnings into a higher tax bracket? #qt

@JulianHillMP: "Vote Liberal and get lucky". SloMo is getting weirder.

@SwannyQLD: Turnbull wouldn't know much about guarantees, but he knows all about rolled gold!
