WHAT THE GOVERNMENT WANTED TO SPIN

Foreshadowing a three-point election theme: strong, safe and together.

WHAT LABOR WANTED TO TALK ABOUT

If Malcolm Turnbull was so great, why is he no longer the prime minister?

WHAT THEY SAID

"I came to this position of leadership not seeking it." - Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

"We will see how that honeymoon period goes." - Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek quotes former minister Concetta Fierravanti-Wells on the Liberal leadership.

"While they (voters) have yet to make up their mind about me, they have made up their mind about the leader of the Labor Party." - Morrison to Bill Shorten.

"How many of the thousands of emails sent to the minister's public email address are resolved by the minister in just a matter of hours?" Labor frontbencher Shayne Neumann on Peter Dutton's au pair visa decisions.

"You've been out there with your wet lettuce ... all I will do is double-down." Dutton to Neumann.
