The Royal Australian Air Force says it's closely monitoring the situation in South Sudan to ensure the safety of its aid drop mission for the United Nations.

Australia's Department of Defence says an RAAF aircraft carried vital equipment and supplies to support the UN mission in South Sudan following attacks on civilians and UN personnel.

A second Australian aircraft is on standby in the United Arab Emirates to provide further assistance and both could be used to evacuate civilians if necessary.

Air Commander Gavin Turnbull has explained the operation to Murray Silby.
