Rabbitohs leave Inglis on ice for Broncos

South Sydney have opted to keep skipper Greg Inglis on ice for one more week as the top six teams battle with key injuries just three weeks out from the NRL finals.

Dane Gagai will start at fullback against Brisbane on Thursday after Alex Johnston suffered a hamstring injury last week to join Robert Jennings and Inglis on the sidelines.

Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds said it was important he and his teammates attempt to build their rhythm despite a mounting injury toll.

"It's just (about) getting our combinations right. We've had a bit of disruption with AJ going down through the game (last week)," Reynolds said on Tuesday.

"Just getting comfortable with people around us, making sure everyone knows their role, and doing their job. If everyone does that, it'll go a long way to the outcome of the game."

All six of the top eight teams have been forced to deal with injuries in round 23.

Ladder leaders the Sydney Roosters have named Dylan Napa to start his first game since returning from a knee injury following Jared Waerea-Hargreaves' ribs being broken last week.

Third-placed Melbourne have gone with Cheyse Blair on the bench after retiring veteran Ryan Hoffman went down with a possible season-ending hamstring injury.

Fourth-placed Penrith have turned to utility Tyrone May to fill the vacancy left by James Maloney, who is unlikely to return until the finals because of a knee problem.

Fifth-placed St George Illawarra are also hurting from a shoulder injury to skipper Gareth Widdop, with Kurt Mann deputising in the halves.

And lastly, sixth-placed Cronulla have called on Scott Sorensen to replace Wade Graham, whose injury-plagued season has continued with a knee issue.

Eighth-placed Brisbane have recalled Jordan Kahu and get Josh McGuire, leaving the seventh-placed Warriors as the only team inside the top eight unchanged from last week.

Just four points separate the top seven sides.

The Wests Tigers, who are two points behind the Broncos in ninth spot, have been boosted by the return of damaging centre Mahe Fonua.

The Tongan international replaces Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, with Kevin Naiqama shiting to the wing and co-captain Chris Lawrence named to make his return from a hamstring injury.
